Sellwood Bridge: 4 Years in 4 Minutes

The new Sellwood Bridge in Portland Oregon by Safdie Rabines Architects

The people of Portland, Oregon are celebrating the completion of the new Sellwood Bridge this weekend in preparation for its official opening on March 1st. The festivities started last night, as sentimental fans of the original 90-year-old Sellwood Bridge said their goodbyes with a candlelight walk across it after its permanent closure to traffic at 7 pm. The walkers were led across the bridge by a kilted bagpiper as they bid it a fond farewell.

The new bridge will open to traffic the first week of March, at which time contractors will begin to remove the old bridge and set up the new bridge for traffic. A community celebration takes place on the new bridge tomorrow, Saturday, February 27, with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. There will also be food carts, retail and non-profit booths on the bridge for the event and entertainment on the main stage and along the bridge. Cheers and Mazel Tov, Portland!

And as promised, below is 4 years of construction whittled down to 4 fabulous minutes in this time lapse video captured from the Sellwood Bridge construction site.
