Midway Rising Moves Forward

This past September, San Diegans were hardly able to pick up a newspaper without seeing headlines about Midway Rising, a proposed 50-acre master plan to develop surplus land in San Diego’s Sports Arena. Following these feature stories and many weeks of anticipation, SRA is happy to share a significant step forward for this exciting project: the San Diego Planning Commission has unanimously approved the Midway Rising plan, moving the project one step closer to reality as it heads to City Council for final consideration later this year.

As one of San Diego’s most transformative developments in recent years, Midway Rising will bring more than 4,000 residential units, a 16,000-seat arena, and a dynamic mix of entertainment, dining, and retail to the Sports Arena neighborhood. In alignment with Safdie Rabines Architects’ design philosophy to blend structure and landscape, the vision for Midway Rising includes the betterment of the built environment and seamless integration with nature. The project will include approximately eight acres of parks and more than six acres of plazas and public spaces, all interconnected by pedestrian corridors, garden terraces, and green spaces designed to promote openness, walkability, and a strong sense of community
