The new Fire Station 50 is sited on the idyllic Rose Canyon in the San Diego County, CA community of University City. Working with the University Community Planning Group and Friends of Rose Canyon with the mutual objective of diminishing any impact to the canyon and sensitive vegetation, a 3-story scheme was utilized in order to minimize the building footprint. Communal living spaces including a kitchen, dining area and “ready room” are located on the top floor along with a large outdoor terrace, capitalizing on the light, air and views of the canyon. A housing approach was incorporated into the 12,000 SF facility in order to create both a highly functional and uplifting environment for the firefighters, who are part-time residents. Low water, low maintenance landscaping – kept up by the firefighters, consists of carefully selected native and non-invasive drought-tolerant species planted around and alongside the structure as to blend with the canyon. The project is targeted for LEED Silver, and was unanimously approved by the city and community stakeholders.
