The heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park is on the cusp of a major architectural transformation, and SRA is happy to announce our involvement in this exciting and visionary project.
The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) has selected Safdie Rabines Architects to act as Executive Architect alongside the internationally renowned Foster + Partners, in the role of Design Architect, on its upcoming renovation. SRA and Foster + Partners will collaborate to bring the reimagined Museum to fruition, while respecting the historic architecture of the Balboa Park site and introducing modern functionality and a seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the Museum’s renovation, which will create a more sustainable, accessible, and environmentally friendly space. Through its design, the project is set to transform the visitor experience, enhance exhibition spaces, and introduce community-focused amenities. It will also double display space and safeguard the Museum’s collection for generations to come with publicly visible storage, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses of exhibition preparation and conservation.
“Safdie Rabines Architects’ deep understanding of the local landscape and their commitment to sustainable, thoughtful design are perfectly aligned with our vision for this project. This local expertise, combined with the global perspective of Foster + Partners, will ensure our museum’s renovation honors its history while creating a truly future-forward space for the community,” said Roxana Velásquez, CEO of The San Diego Museum of Art in an article published in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
For those seeking a closer look, SDMA’s new exhibition A New Vision for the Next Century opened on August 30 and previews the upcoming West Wing renovation.
