UCLA Sunset Canyon Topping-Out Celebration

Recently, Safdie Rabines Architects joined UCLA Recreation and Capital Planning, Abbott Construction, and project partners to celebrate the steel topping-out of a new multi-functional facility at UCLA’s Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

This milestone marked a major step forward for a project that represents one of the most significant transformations to the historic Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, originally designed more than 50 years ago. The new facility replaces six existing structures on the site, creating a contemporary recreation environment designed to support wellness, student life, and community engagement on the UCLA campus.

Topping-out ceremonies are a longstanding construction tradition that signal the transition from primary structural work into the next phases of development. This event commemorated the placement of the new building’s final structural steel beam, and served as an opportunity to recognize the collaboration of the full project team—the client, architecture and engineering, and the contractor—who are bringing the project to life.

Designed for integration with the existing UCLA Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, this new building reflects the team’s commitment to creating spaces that support recreation, connection, and long-term campus growth – and builds upon Safdie Rabines Architects’ history of collaboration with UCLA, which began with the UCLA Court of Sciences Student Center, and our firm’s 30+ years of designing for multiple campuses across the UC system.
